CLS MEDICAL WELLNESS COMES TO VALKENBURG
[LIFE-SCI: Maastricht/Valkenburg, June 6]

Healthcare is going to become the new knowledge-driven industry, with great prospects for Limburg and the Euroregion. The arrival here of CyGenics Life Sciences (CLS) will play an important role as a catalyst in this development. It will get the ball rolling by coordinating top medical care and follow-on services to patients worldwide from Valkenburg

This is taking an important step towards the achievement of an ambitious Euroregional medical wellness concept, one of the spearheads in the Acceleration Agenda (the economic development policy of the Province of Limburg).

In part as a follow up to the visit of Philip Yeo — the man behind Biopolis in Singapore — to Maastricht in 2005, excellent relations have been developed with Steven Fang, the CEO of CyGenics who has been alerted to the prospects of bringing large numbers of patients worldwide to a Worldwide Health Valley in Valkenburg

The presence of high-quality healthcare and the latest medical technology applications in the Meuse-Rhine area are the starting point. And, in ten years time the Health, Care and Cure landscape in Meuse-Rhine is going to look completely different. The University of Maastricht has entered into a strategic alliance with the universities of Liège, Hasselt, and Louvain.

The three university hospitals have joined forces too and there will be a pioneering role for Aachen’s University Hospital. Orbis – representing 1 hospital, 9 care centers and 4,000 staff - together with the Atrium hospital in Heerlen have also entered into strategic alliances and will form the epicenter of the new development.

DSM and Philips (also here) are world leaders in the area of biomedical and medical equipment, which facilitates patient mobility and monitoring within the Euroregion. Another prominent role in the field of medical technology has been reserved for Aachen’s RWTH University, the top technical university in the Euroregion.

The stage is set for Limburg as the heart of the Worldwide Health Valley — the international healthcare region. Healthcare, now synonymous with prevention, will involve periodic health checks, wellness, fitness, recreational sports, culture and gastronomy. This is the region to recover your health in (top cure and care); remain healthy (prevention and wellness) and enjoy life (gastronomy and culture).

Following up on this Mayor Constant Nuytens of Valkenburg on the Geul says the town will continue to support the development of medical and wellness activities. He referred to recent initiatives in Valkenburg. Orbis medical care in Sittard-Geleen has signed a contract with hotelier Camille Oostwegel for the accommodation of certain patients in dedicated hotel rooms with permanent online medical monitoring. A comparable project is ongoing at the Valkenhorst private clinic, which is working with Grand Hotel Voncken at the foot of the Cauberg where a special ‘care hotel’ is being built.

‘Valkenburg has a long tradition, but is keeping up with change. Fifteen years ago Thermae 2000 spa wellness activities came on stream, then came the restoration of Château St. Gerlach. They form the basis on which we can go further,’ says Constant Nuytens.
