As with all growing areas of knowledge, logistics is developing its own terminology and as a small contribution to this we would like to point out that 4PL stands for a fourth-party logistics provider. A lead logistics provider or fourth-party logistics provider is a consulting firm specializing in logistics transportation and supply chain management.

Typical fourth-party logistics providers are Theodore Wille Intertrade (TWI), CPCS (CPCS_transcom), Morpheus consulting (morpheus-group.com), Deloitte, WS Logistics, Procurus BMT Limited, Rollins and Accenture.

As the 4PL industry is still in its infancy and currently being created throughout the world (Blue Ocean Strategy), its definition and function still leads to a lot of confusion - even for professionals in the logistics industry.
