MAJOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT PROJECT

[LOG/GOV: Maastricht, March 3]
A major step has been made in the development of four public-transport projects in South Limburg by the signing of an agreement on a program of action for regional public-transport.

Deputy Bert Kersten, councilor Wim Hazeu (Maastricht), and councilor Jos Offermans (Parkstad) signed the document about agreements over specific roles and the division of costs for the four projects. This will make South Limburg much more accessible. The four projects involve the Hasselt–Maastricht tram service, Public Transport Rail-Crossing Maastricht East, the passage through Parkstad and the passage Maastricht–Vaals–Aachen.

The Hasselt–Maastricht tram project should cut the travel time down between the cities from 71 to 36 minutes. There will be a connection between the Belvedere in Maastricht’s center and the station. The government has produced EUR 18m for the funding. The municipality and the province of Limburg are also making their contribution. The total cost is EUR 45m.

The public-transport rail from Maastricht East and the route from Maastricht–Vaals–Aachen involved transport from Wittevrouwenveld–Geusselt–Amby–Meerssen and on the route, Maastricht, Vaals, and Aachen. Where possible and necessary the frequency of the links will be increased. The total cost is EUR 18.55m, of which the central government will pay EUR 8.2m.

Through traffic in Parkstad relates to traffic from the centers of Brunssum, Heerlen and Kerkrade, which will have a central route that they can use as an alternative to the roundabout way that is currently used. Other links in Parkstad are also possible at a later date and will cost EUR 7.1m.

More information can be obtained from the communications cluster at the province.
