BELGIAN RAIL TO FRANKFURT
[LOG: Brussels, June 16]
The target is for high-speed trains to carry three-quarters of all travelers between Brussels and Frankfurt. This was stated by Marc Descheemaecker, the boss of Belgian rail (SNCB), in the context of the completion of the new high-speed rail link between Liège and the German frontier. Descheemaecker pointed to the success of the Eurostar which carries three-quarters of the traffic between Brussels and London, and the same should be possible, in his view, for Frankfurt. The high-speed line is going to be competition for the airlines. Belgium has 206km of high-speed rail lines and the rest of the 108km is for modern, traditional trains. Belgium is the first European country to have completed its high-speed network, and this represented an investment of EUR 5.2bn.
