ETHIOPIAN MAIDEN FLIGHT

On Thursday, March 5 the first wide body MD11 aircraft of Ethiopian Airlines made its inaugural flight to Europe, destination Liège Airport. The aircraft departed from Addis-Ababa and, after a tech-stop in Cairo, reached Liege Airport in the early evening. As already announced, Ethiopian Airlines has relocated its cargo activities to Liège Airport in June 2008.

Ethiopia’s national airline operates 6 to 10 daytime flights weekly, with a cargo of flowers. Ethiopian Airlines was operating through Southern Air on a wet lease basis. However, to match the ongoing demand for northbound traffic and to keep up with its growth, Ethiopian Airlines acquired two wide body MD11 aircraft converted to a freighter-configuration, with a payload of approx. 85 tons.

These flights will be handled by AviaPartner Liège on the ramp, with warehousing by
AviaPartner Cargo Liège. This reconfirms and strengthens Liège Airport’s specialization in the area of perishable cargo. These specific commodities represent 20% of the total cargo traffic at Liège Airport.
