INLAND WATERWAYS

[LOG: Antwerp, January 16]
NEA, a publication specializing on the inland waterways, says that Europe invests too little in this form of transport. Of the EUR 800bn invested in infrastructure in Europe since 1995, only 1% has been used for inland waterways. The volume of cargo on inland waterways for this period has, however, grown between 10 and 15%. Highway transport receives the lion’s share. Of the EUR 70bn invested annually in infrastructure, 64% goes to highway transport. Rail gets 32%, and the seaports get 3%, with inland waterways getting 1%. The issue is whether these investments meet the requirements. This was the question put by Menno Mennist of the NEA in his New Years Speech.
