PORT LANAKEN

[LOG: Lanaken, June 12]
John Hoofs writes in Dagblad de Limburger that the Belgian town of Lanaken, across the border from Maastricht, is planning a major rail-cargo terminal, designed to be a new logistical hub. The city has a major rail-marshalling yard, which is 600 by 35 meters, which is within the new business park known as ‘the Albert-Knoop’. The Belgians have invested EUR 28m, where containers with bulk and piece goods will be loaded and discharged via rail.

At the site, there is more than 100 hectares available for business, 57 on the Lanaken side and 64 on the Maastricht side. The first freight trains will arrive in 2010 and they will be 600 meters long; 200 meters longer than the longest train that can stop in Maastricht. The next stage is the short-sea facility.
