COGNITIVE HEALTH

[LIFE-SCI: Heerlen, August 7]
DSM is apparently making an application for a novel nutraceutical composition of a food additive comprising Stevia extract or its constituents. There is an increasing interest in the development for compounds as well as nutraceutical compositions that may be used to improve learning, memory and alertness both in elderly and young people, according to the patent application.

In this case the application relates to stevia rebaudiana, which is commonly known as sweet leaf. It’s a type of sunflower that’s grown largely for its sweet leaves. It’s a sweetener and sugar substitute and it’s attracted attention in the rise in demand for low-carbohydrate, low-sugar alternatives. It is also possible that it’s useful in treating obesity and high blood pressure.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has received three petitions for Stevia sweeteners from EUSTAS (the European Stevia Association), Cargill and Morita.
