MERKEL TO DELIVER EULOGY

[GOV: Aachen, February 22]
The Federal German Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel, the winner of the Charlemagne Prize in 2008, will deliver the eulogy at the award ceremony of the Charlemagne Prize this year. This was announced by the spokesperson for the Charlemagne Prize directorate, Dr Jürgen Linden, and Aachen’s mayor, Marcel Philipp. The Charlemagne Prize, which goes to those who have played a role in European unity, will be awarded on May 13 at the City Hall in Aachen to the Polish Prime Minister, Mr Donald Tusk (see Issue.

As Messrs Linden and Philipp emphasized, the award will take place at a time when everyone wants the Lisbon Treaty, which was ratified last year, to come into effect. The Chancellor has done her best in this respect. At the same time, the particular contribution of Donald Tusk to the ratification was an important signal for new member states for an extension of European integration. In the view of the directorate of the Charlemagne Prize, the German-Polish understanding and close cooperation in the Weimar Triangle is of very great importance.

Messrs Linden and Philipp were convinced that this year will make an important contribution to the further development of European unity.
