SOLAR CELLS IN HUY-WAREMME

[GOV/SCI-TECH: Liège, February 17]
Thirty-one municipalities/districts in Huy-Waremme are providing their population of 180,000 with solar energy. This is a pilot project, unique in Europe and supported by the Walloon region and the European ERDF fund, in 31 districts/municipalities in Huy-Waremme.

In the first place they have photovoltaic, or solar cell, kits on two public buildings (government administration and schools) in each of the 31 communes, making a total of 3,700m2 of cells. Production should achieve 180,000kWh per annum, and reduce CO2 by 82,080kg. Each kit is standard for a one-family house, producing around 4,000kWh, and everyone can produce their own energy.

The first units will be installed at the end of March at Donceel, Lincent and Braives, and the installation procedure will continue in the area until the end of June.

The second part of the project is information and education on solar-cell technology, which will also be offered. In concrete terms, school children will be informed by their teachers and others will be invited to sessions where information will be provided. The project costs EUR 2.29m, supported principally by Europe and the region, and also with a more modest contribution by the 31 parties, which means their investment will be paid off on an average of four years, and they will have green certificates for 15 years and benefit from an economy on the costs of electricity, estimated at the current price of EUR 720 per kit.
