DOC FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
[EDU: Hasselt, December 17] Governments both at home and abroad are revealing increasing interests for this soft approach.
Professor Jaco Vangronsveld, director of the Center for Environmental Studies at the University of Hasselt received an Hon Doc from the Agricultural University of Plovdiv in Bulgaria for his services to science and research into the toxicity of heavy metals in plants and phytoremediation from polluted soil. Phytoremediation is the biological remediation of environmental problems using plants. The problem of polluted soil is particular great in Eastern Europe, which is why the professor’s work has been recognized there. Risk management using phytoremediation is in many respects a relatively cheap and acceptable way of alternative for these brown fields.
