MEUSE-RHINE ANEW

[GOV: Liège, December 16]
On December 8, just before the change in the chairmanship of the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion, the directorate of the region approved a structural change in the organization. Two years ago the five partners decided to cooperate in seven important areas and to intensivize and accelerate this cooperation. The idea is to get the process moving as well as that of the new director of Meuse-Rhine, Hans Niessen. And the first step will be a consultation to bring the new structure into existence with all of the partner regions.

Structure
In order to make the MRE’s organs more decisive and to improve them, a number of changes will be adopted. The new council still comprises political representatives, 51 of them. Then there is the socio-economic council of which one-third are delegates from employment organizations and one-third from employer’s organizations, a total of 30. The committees will make way for seven strategic groups (ten to 20) which will be concerned with the administrative guidance of cross-border cooperation in the areas of safety, health and care, the labor market and education, mobility and infrastructure, culture and tourism, knowledge institutes and economic development. Further, there will be temporary committees (17 to 20) that will look at the challenges to Meuse-Rhine and make recommendations. Themes such as Meuse-Rhine as a model region in areas such as climate warming and demographic development are good examples of this.

Communications
An important area of concern is the exchange of information in Meuse-Rhine. Various thematic networks will form the backbone of the cross-border cooperation in Meuse-Rhine and one thinks in this respect of interested parties, patient organizations, etc. Their ideas and views are indispensable in developing the required three-year cross-border activity plans which are being planned for each area of focus. On the occasion of the change of chairmanship of Meuse-Rhine, there will be conference held in Hasselt in March and during this conference the last three years will be assessed and the context of activities for the coming three years will be presented.
