CHARLEMAGNE PRIZE PROGRAM
[GOV: Aachen, April 24] The program, which is more than 40 pages long, presents a wide range of interesting events, political lectures and discussions, as well as concerts, lectures and parties. The Charlemagne prize goes, as noted in Issue 196, to Dr Andrea Riccardi, the founder of the Sant’Egidio community, for this example of civil society’s engagement on behalf of a humane Europe that exhibits solidarity for other people and cultures beyond its borders. The prize itself will be awarded, traditionally, on Ascension Day (this year on May 21) in the coronation hall of the Aachen City Hall.
In the Werkmeistergericht of the Aachen City Hall, the mayor of Aachen, Jürgen Linden, and Professor Walter Eversheim of the Charlemagne Prize directorate, introduced the program for the prize ceremony. This will begin on April 28 with a lecture by the author Navid Kermani. The former German Federal Minister of the Interior Gerhard Baum would conclude the series on May 26 with a lecture on his views of ‘human rights are basic rights, can those who disregard them also appeal to them?’
