LIMBURG ACROSS BORDERS...
[GOV: Maastricht, February 20] The provincial government sees this motion as a call to the government to play an active role in solving the cross-border issues in Limburg and Meuse-Rhine. In Meuse-Rhine there are three national systems of legislation and even more jurisdictions, and active participation of the Dutch, Belgian and German governments is necessary to come up with concrete creative solutions. The Dutch government now must seek national support from the Belgian and German neighbors. Minister De Horst, who likes the province of Limburg, is concerned with pragmatic result-based approaches, where possible within an existing legislative framework. Some times it will be necessary, after consultation, to be able to escape from the framework. And that’s the core idea of the experimental region. The province feels that the experimental region will be of value for all border provinces.
The Limburg provincial government has responded with great satisfaction at the motion put by Messrs Schinkelshoek (CDA), Heijnen (PvdA), and Van Beek (VVD), who submitted a motion for the national government to work actively with Dutch and Belgian governments in developing an experimental region in and around Limburg. This relates specifically to cross-border employment, healthcare, public transport, innovation, education, police and justice, and the emergency services.
