Mayor Gerd Leers of Maastricht said good-bye to a very large group of supporters in the City of Maastricht on February 26. He had resigned (Issue 222) at the prospect of losing a vote of confidence in the city council. This came at the end of series of events initiated by his involvement in a property deal that went wrong in Bulgaria. It was interesting to note a curious coincidence in the British press today, where British investors in a Bulgarian winter sports development seem to have become involved in an analogous situation to that of the Mayor and to have encountered the same sort of treatment.
