TRENDS

[EDIT: Eijsden, October 15]
It would be difficult to point specific top stories in this issue, but certain ongoing trends make themselves felt. One is the general ‘beefing up’ of the presence of the Port of Liège, with the advent of the explosion in the growth of container traffic. Another is the ongoing game of chess being played by the energy companies, as market liberalization progresses, with Nuon now wanting to challenge Luminus (Centrica).

On the energy front too, there are also more stories of new sustainable energy plants, like the proposed hydro plant in Borgharen and odourless biogas in Düren – the latter not really thought a good thing for Avantis. Finally, though not always well publicized,* there are the ongoing developments on the nutrition front. DSM has its slimming milk drink and its green tea extract is said to help in fending off Diabetes 2. Omega 3 is everywhere, with interesting studies of its role coming from Maastricht U. It is even included in my dog’s diet. Come to think of it, we all got cod liver oil when we were young.

On the SCI-TECH front the 3D electron microscope looks exciting.
