SPICY MAASMECHELEN

The organization of Spicy Maasmechelen, a culinary festival in Maasmechelen in Belgian Limburg, has released information about some of the menus to be served at this unique culinary festival which will take place on Saturday, September 11 and Sunday 12.

There is to be an international aspect to this, reflecting on the origins of many of the population in Maasmechelen.

Vespaclub Azzurri will provide Italian barbecue food; the Agios Dimitrios Greek Cultural Center will introduce food from old Greece. ETKI, the Eijsden Turkish Ladies Group, will present special Turkish bread and the Vrij Vooruit Royal Harmony Band will serve meat snacks and a spicy aperitif. The Belgian-Turkish Culture Group will introduce classic Turkish cuisine. The Triangel will surprise everyone with Italian and Greek specialties, and the World Shop will bring products from the South. Chiro Akori will present Mexican food, and the family association, Fusie Maasmechelen, will have local dishes and game.

Slomsek, a Slovenian choir, will provide some music and VIVA SVV Leut-Meeswijk will serve old-fashioned Flemish grandma’s cuisine. The School, Youth and Parents Association will bring more snacks from Turkey and the El Islam Mosque will have couscous with homemade Moroccan cakes and steaming glasses of mint tea. The Saint Aloysius band will have Flemish food and Brand New Style will serve Spanish paella and a bit of Flamenco. There is a great deal more of Turkish and Italian food from La Lucania, Sehzade, Mane, Vrede en Geluk, and ACLI. And, of course, the wine guild Saint Joris will pour wine from the Maasland.

There will also be top chefs: Dino Bagnato from Il Fiore to represent Italy; Greece will be represented by Mike Paraponiaris, who used to be at La Butte aux Bois in Lanaken and now runs his own restaurant, Leros. Then there will be Moke Karmaoui for Moroccan food, and Peter Piatkowski, a disciple of Frank Fol and Viki Geunes and the new chef at Gusto in the Carbon hotel in Genk. There will also be gastronomic fireworks too from Alex Clevers of Vivendum in Dilsen.

…and, of course, the market of taste.
