TORREFACTION
[BIZ/INFRA: Eupen, November 7] The start of the operation of the wood torrefaction unit in Amel to produce biocoal is scheduled for before the end of 2009. Preparation works for commissioning of the wood torrefaction unit have started. Various tests for using biocoal at utility scale will take place early in 2010 with various European utilities. 4EnergyInvest has received confirmation that EUR 1,263,600 of regional subsidies are to go to the wood-torrefaction project in Amel.
Talks at the German–Belgian Eifel Energy Day referred to a biomass power plant and various other initiatives, and quality of life played a role. The focus revolved around quality of life and the important note that from a technical point of view the innovative project at Kaiserbaracke was in fact a model project. The organization is headed by Renogen’s 4Energy Invest, which is a Belgium-based renewable-energy company concerned with creating and managing a portfolio of small to medium-sized locally embedded projects that valorize biomass indirectly or directly into energy. The core business of 4EnergyInvest consists in turning non-contaminated wood biomass, which is at the end of its life in the forestry sector, into energy, either directly through co-generation to create heat or electricity, or indirectly through torrefaction to produce renewable solid fuels such as biocoal.
