MAASTRICHT AIRPORT

[BIZ/LOG: Maastricht, November 6]
During the month of October 8,200 tonnes of cargo were handled at Maastricht Aachen Airport (MAA). This was a record in tonnage handled in one month at the airport.

This record cargo volume can be attributed to newly acquired freight services to and from the Far East and Moscow, in combination with the growth in the number of flights of long existing customers to and from Istanbul and Nairobi. The overnight courier express services, as well as chartered flight activities, have also recently shown growth.

Sander Heijmans, CEO of Maastricht Aachen Airport and Maastricht Handling Services: “with this positive development we expect to process an equal amount of freight or even realize a slight growth compared to 2008/’09. Even during the lowest point of the recession we have performed considerably better than the global averages”.

To accommodate further growth MAA is building a new 18,000-m2 cargo terminal on the east side of the airport. The accompanying platform is equipped to handle the newest cargo aircraft including the new Boeing 747-800F. The cargo terminal is expected to be operational in 2011.
