NEW WINE

[BIZ: Flémalle, August 4]
On the heights above the river at Flémalle there is a vineyard which is attracting a lot of attention, and it’s harvest for 2009 is looking good. There are two appellation: the AOC Cotes de Sambre et Meuse, which is a Chardonnay in oak; and a Pinot Gris–Chardonnay blend. Both wines are a little less “ fat” (i.e.: concentrated, rich on the palate) than 2007 but are well balanced despite a poor summer. There is also the vin de pays, ‘Les Jardins de Wallonie’, and this has produced a Gewürztraminer and a Regent, which was vinified like a white, with the idea of developing a rosé. It has a magnificent color and is rich, despite the poor year, and most promising as the vines gain in age.
