EON NUMBER 3 IN BELGIUM
[BIZ: Brussels, August 2] The Belgian market share of Electrabel is reduced by 65% as a result of this transaction. The German group also becomes the owner of the gas-fired plant in Vilvoorde, the coal-fired plant in Langerlo and a part of the production of the three oldest Belgian nuclear power plants. The deal has to be agreed by the competition authorities.
The Electrabel power company, a subsidiary of the French GDF Suez energy group, has exchanged a series of power plants with its German competitor, E.ON. As a result, Electrabel now has control over a German production group of 1,700MW, including coal-fired power stations, hydroelectric power and nuclear power. In exchange the German group gets the same capacity on the Belgian–Dutch market. It makes E.ON the third biggest producer of power in Belgium after Electrabel and SPE-Luminus.
