POWER TRANSMISSION

[BIZ/INFRA: Brussels, February 18]
Coreso, the first regional technical coordination center, to be shared by several TSO’s (transmission system operators), started its activities on February 16 and was officially inaugurated today Wednesday February 18 by Dominique Maillard, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Coreso, who is also Chairman of the Executive Board of RTE, and Daniel Dobbeni, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Elia, in the presence of representatives of the European Commission and Parliament. The inauguration ceremony was placed under the patronage of the French and Belgian Ministers of Energy.

Coreso was founded on December 19 2008 by the French and Belgian electricity transmission system operators RTE and Elia. National Grid, the British TSO, that had indicated its interest in the initiative from the very beginning, is now in the final stages of formalizing its entry into Coreso. Vattenfall Europe Transmission, a German TSO (of Swedish parentage), is in the process of acquiring a minor participation and will support the Coreso team.

The center has started the first phase of its operations, providing integrated forecasts related to grid security (in the afternoon for the next day), seven days a week, to the national control centers.

From July 2009, the center will be operational around the clock, and will provide network security analyses and monitoring on a continuous basis.

The creation of Coreso is a first concretization of the increased operational cooperation that has been started between TSOs, in line with the need clearly expressed by the European Commission in its draft Directive and by electricity market players. Its main aim is to enable a better regional integration of renewable generation and to guarantee safe management of cross-border flows, which are increasing sharply with the development of intraday markets.
Elia, National Grid and RTE are further looking forward to a close cooperation within their regions, Central-West Europe (France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany) and FUI (France, United Kingdom, Ireland).

Coreso is based in Brussels, avenue de Cortenbergh 71. Its staff, placed under the direction of Olivier Arrivé, is currently composed of five engineers. Nine additional engineers will join them by the start of the operation on a continuous basis.
