MOSA:SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

[BIZ: Maastricht, June 26]
Mosa, the tile manufacturer in Maastricht, wants to expand by building a new plant for floor tiles. The MD, Arthur Thomaes, says that this will provide 140 new jobs to add to the current total of 550. The location is on a vacant site next to the district of Limmel. Mr Thomaes thinks that there are a number of advantages: in addition to employment, this is a sustainable operation in terms of the production process and Mosa is going to generate its own power by using residual heat. The plant will also use new materials, and two new access roads will mean that Limmel will not be subject to traffic overload.

Mr Thomaes estimates that production will start in 2010 and it will represent an investment of EUR 30m. He also points out that Mosa is the only remaining company that uses sustainable methods to produce all its tiles in The Netherlands. The new plant will fit in with Mosa’s mission to distinguish itself by its design, sustainability and its ‘Made in The Netherlands’ label. In the new plant, the tiles will be produced using a completely new energy-efficient technology (see above) and Mosa also plans to invest in energy efficiency and generation by using residual heat and heat pumps. This is not a requirement but its one of Mosa’s ambitions.

The local community is not explicitly against this development, but they do have one or two concerns. In Mosa’s plans, of course, attention will be paid to its location next to the Limmel residential area. Mosa is concerned to be a good neighbor and to find solutions for problems that may arise.
