BIOENERGY’S POTATO PEEL POWER

BioEnergy has started up in Lommel, the company will process potato peels into electric power for around 12,500 families. BioEnergy was set up by Farm Frites, which makes French fries, and the Machiels Group, in order to provide an environment-friendly solution for the waste produced by the potato business.

Farm Frites processes more than 700,000 tons of potatoes into French fries annually. This results in 120,000 tons of waste. A direct pipeline carries the peel to BioEnergy. This also means that there are 3000 fewer truck rides annually. Steam and water go from BioEnergy to Farm Frites. The project represents an investment of EUR 16m. BioEnergy employs 15.
