LIEGE AIRPORT EUR 50M

[BIZ/LOG: Liège, January 18]
Philippe Lawson writes in La Libre that Liège Airport is going to diversify the management of its property and commercial activities and that a new operator for handling activities is expected in 2008. They are expected to return 10% on the investment to their investors starting in 2009, and to reduce government aid. The Airport’s results for 2007 are good and will be presented later. There is also an ambitious new 15-year business plan, running from 2008-2021, produced by the airport’s management and submitted to the Walloon authorities, specifically to the minister responsible, André Antoine. They expect to invest EUR 50m in the period indicated (2008-2021) and dividends should rise to close to EUR 20.8m between 2007-2021. The plan includes an increase in cargo.

The EUR 50m investment involves the construction of three freight-handling halls over a period of 15 years which will generate EUR 2.7m in annual revenues. For each investment, a study will be made to determine whether the best choice is for the airport to build and lease them themselves or to have them built and run by specialists. Passenger tax is currently EUR 3, it will be EUR 5 in 2012 and EUR 7 in 2017. Because of the efficiency of the operation, it is expected that the tariffs in the new halls will be as low as EUR 15 per ton, and in the context of this development Liège Airport is expecting new operator, Liège Handling (in which Liège Airport has teamed up with the former MD of Maastricht Handling Services), which is expected to handle 30,000 tons from its first year.

There is also to be construction of two more floors for the parking facilities, providing 650 more spaces. This construction will start in 2008. Two new office buildings (2009 and 2015) are expected, as are a service station in 2009 and an increase in the area of the hotel for 2013. Then there is a range of other activities and an expected reduction in energy consumption by 20%.
