CONTI WARNS ABOUT CO2 RULES

[BIZ: Düsseldorf, December 18]
Mark C Schneider, writing in the German business paper Handelsblatt, notes that the automotive supplier Continental, which has a major base in Aachen, is warning politicians not to go too far with their CO2 reduction programs so that they damage the country’s industry. The article points out that there must be moderation in change otherwise Germany’s successful automobiles will turn out to be thousands of Euros more expensive, an attempt should be to spread the burden of change.

The European Commission is presenting its proposal to reduce CO2 emissions through 2012. The German automotive industry is concerned about the proposals which will effect premium vehicles, like Audio, BMW, Daimler and Porsche which produce more CO2 than small cars (like the French and Italian vehicles). With the use of new developments and the use of biofuels, CO2 is supposed to be reduced to 120g.
