UMICORE

[BIZ: Eijsden, December 17]
The Belgian materials group Umicore, with locations in Meuse-Rhine, has entered into an agreement for the takeover of the Imperial Smelting and Refining company of Canada. The Canadian company, located in Toronto, is the most important supplier of precious metals and recycling services for the jewelry industry in Canada. Imperial is also active in the United States. Imperial is a family business which employs 70 and its revenues in 2006 were EUR 5.8m, excluding the value of the precious metals.

The takeover puts Umicore in a position to expand its jewelry activities to North America. ‘We will not only be making use of a local product platform, but we will also be putting the products and services of our plant in Pforzheim on the market,’ said Jörg Beuers of Umicore.
