SCHEEPVAART & CHP PLANTS
[BIZ/LOG: Brussels, December 6]
The Scheepvaart company, which is authorized to manage the Albert Canal, the Kempen/Campine canals, the Scheldt-Rhine link and the shared areas of the Meuse, is having an environmental impact study carried out to determine whether five combined heat and power stations (CHP) could be built on the Albert canal. Scheepvaart’s boss, Willy Vandeurzen, has made this public. In view of the difference in height on the river, if the plans are actually to be carried out, the combined heat and power stations could be installed at the locks of Kwaadmechelen, Hasselt, Diepenbeek, Genk and Olen, and provide 5,000 families with electricity. The construction of these power stations could start in 2011 at the earliest.
