BELGIAN ONLINE PHARMACY

[BIZ: Brussels, December 2]
There is a new Royal decree coming up that will allow pharmacists to provide non-prescription medication via the Internet, according to the magazine, Body Talk. This relates to Belgium. As we have reported, in Netherlands’ Limburg DocMorris has a head start in this business.

The pharmacy will ensure that the online order is delivered by post or express service. The Internet sale of non-prescription medications outside of a pharmacy is against the law, as is the sale of medications requiring a prescription. The advisory role of the pharmacy would then be squeezed out by the Internet, according to professor Luc Hombroeckx, who lectures in pharmaceutical legislation at Louvain U. A pharmacy that wants to provide medication via the Internet has to register this in the first instance with the Federal Agency for Medication and Healthcare Products (FAGG), and in the case of online sales too, the pharmacist will be expected to advise the patients.
