UNDERGROUND POWER STORAGE
[BIZ/INFRA: Maastricht, September 13] Background is available at the link below and a useful brochure is available from www.royalhaskoning.com and info@sogecom.nl. The presentation of the project in Limburg was chaired by Governor Leon Frissen, supported by the Deputy responsible for sustainability Mr Bert Kersten.
The OPAC project for underground power storage in pump accumulator power plants, is an addition to the arsenal of new energy hardware. There is an example of this operation at the Coo reservoir in Belgium’s German-speaking Region, just south of Maastricht. Pumped storage hydro electric power is a method of storing and producing electricity to supply high peak demands by moving water between reservoirs at different elevations. Now, there is a plan to introduce this new form of energy in Limburg probably in the Born area, where the underground rock formation is suitable. The project is headed by Jan Huynen of Sogecom, accompanied by representatives of Essent, Royal Haskoning and Harry Droog from the Platform for Sustainable Electric Power. The following step is to mobilize the political establishment at the national level to support this development.
