AMOS SILICIUM CARBIDE MIRRORS

The Liège aerospace company Amos, has been chosen by EADS Astrium in Toulouse, France to manufacture three silicium carbide mirrors destined to operate at minus 180° C on board of Gaia, the next major satellite in the European Space Association’s (ESA) project, following Herschel and Plank. The contract is worth EUR 2.1m and represents 15,000 hours of polishing and precision tests, or 18 months of a production process with Amos project engineers and designers. The first mirror will be delivered in 2008. The Gaia project is a 450 million ESA project designed to investigate the composition formation and evolution of our galaxy, and to contribute to the study of extra solar planets and galaxies. Launch is scheduled for 2011.
