AACHEN TOURIST STATISTICS
[BIZ/LEI: Aachen, June 20] The Aachen region is particularly popular with foreign visitors and has a good second place in North-Rhine Westphalia. Tourist magnets like the cathedral in Aachen recorded 1.2 million visitors; the old center of Bad Münstereifel (with its Heino Café) and the tri-country point with the highest mountain or hill in The Netherlands, each received a million visitors. Among the regional attractions — 100,000 to 500,000 visitors a year — were the thermal and other pools and baths, which give the region a wellness focus. Major events, such as the Aachen Christmas market, recorded 1.5 million visitors, the Düren Anna Fair had 800,000 visitors and in the 2006 the World Equestrian Games received 576,500. Regional specials receiving between 50,000 and half a million visitors were the Monschau Christmas market, Düren’s jazz and the ‘Rursee in Flames’.
The tourist business is doing well in Aachen and it has a focus on wellness, culture, nature, etc. As far as the statistics for 2006 are concerned, around one million overnight stays in the Aachen region were recorded. The focus is on the city of Aachen, the Euskirchen district and the southern area of Aachen. Heinsberg, which was at a fairly low level, showed the highest level of development. The average stay is two and half days in the region.
