AZM: NEW BUILDINGS

[BIZ/LIFE-SCI: Maastricht, May 16]
azM, the Maastricht University Hospital, is starting major construction activities this year. This is the direct consequence of a strategic reorientation plan called ‘AZ Move’, in which the point of departure is a patient focus. Efficient bundling of patient care has led to what are called ‘care lines’ and ‘care centers’ and these are the basis for the new construction plans.

The new hospital structure will not only be more accessible for the patient, but the care centers will also be recognizable and the patient care will be more efficiently organized. The physical manifestation of this will be in the new construction and in relocation. In the new context, the organization will, be more visible and intelligible for the patient.

The annexes that the hospital had elsewhere in the city will now, once more, be located at Randwijck, with all patient care located in one building complex. A start will be made with the wing on the right of the 3X building, extended by a pedestrian bridge on the north side and ending with a new entrance to the hospital.

The new construction will also involve two buildings on the north and south of the in-patient building, extended on the north side with a new entrance. In the long-term, there will be a new building on top of the distribution center.

Phasing and Costs
The new building will take place in two phases: from 2007 to 2012, the non-clinical activities, such as outpatient departments, will be started; and, after 2012, the clinical areas, such as operation rooms and hospital wards, will begin.

In the 2007-2012 period, a total of 21,000m2 of new space will be created at a cost of EUR 45m. Moves and internal reconstruction in existing locations, a total of 12,000m2 will cost EUR 15m.
