ELECTRABEL INVESTS EUR 3.5BN

[BIZ/INFRA: Brussels, May 11]
The Electrabel power utility is investing EUR 3.5bn in five new gas- and coal-fired power stations in The Netherlands and Germany. The new power stations have a total capacity of 3,200MW. In The Netherlands two gas-fired plants are being built at the Flevo site and one coal-fired plant, which can also use biomass, at the Maasvlakte near Rotterdam. In Germany there are to be coal-fired power plants at sites in Stade, Brunsbuttel and Wilhelmshaven. A contract has been signed with Hitachi Power Europe and Alstom for the construction of these plants.

The power plants will become operational between 2009 and 2012. The investments are within the strategy of Electabel’s parent company Suez to grow its worldwide electrical power production capacity to 75,000MW through 2012. Currently capacity is around 52,000MW.
