ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENTS

In The Netherlands, as well as globally, the importance of alternative investments is increasing. While traditional investments mainly make use of financial markets, alternative investments typically employ investments outside financial markets, like infrastructure or private equity.

News reports about hedge funds, environmental friendly investments and other alternative investments are abundant. The recent merger of ABN AMRO is the direct result of the actions of a hedge fund.
The media coverage of some of these alternative investments is however not always positive. Although traditional financial markets provide good returns, most alternative investments seem to offer a better return, but the question is at what risk?

Will alternative investments in the future be a substantial part of every globally diversified portfolio or will their impact on finance and investments be only marginal?
