PROSPECTS FOR HEIDELBERG

[BIZ: Maastricht, May 10]
The Maastricht cement factory, ENCI is expected to remain open for longer because of the increase in demand for cement. There had been plans to close the plant, but the German company, Heidelberg Cement Group, has announced that it now wants to reconsider closing the plant in 2009. Heidelberg, in which Spohn Cement took a controlling share in 2005, is active currently with takeovers in England too, where it is looking at the building materials manufacturer Hanson, the biggest maker of aggregates.

The plant in Maastricht ENCI employs 250 and the plant produced 1.4 million tons of cement last year. The decision to close in 2009 was taken in 2004 but market forces look as if they might be about to change that.
