LI NING IN MAASTRICHT

The Chinese sports clothing brand Li Ning is going to compete in Europe with Nike and Adidas. The first Li Ning store opened on April 1 in Maastricht’s Mosae Forum. This year Li Ning wants to open two stores in The Netherlands and, perhaps another one in Maastricht. The target is 20 Li Ning stores in The Netherlands by 2011.

Li Ning is famous for winning 6 medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, including 3 gold medals (in floor exercises, on the pommel horse, and rings), 2 silver medals, and a bronze medal. In 1982, he won six of the seven medals awarded at the Sixth World Cup Gymnastic Competition, earning him the title "Prince of gymnastics".

In China two new Li Ning stores open other doors every day, and there are 3,500 already. Wai Ki Chiu (32), a businessman born in The Netherlands, will be running the leading operation in Western Europe.
