AACHEN INNOVATION PRIZE

[BIZ: Aachen, November 23]
There were 570 guests for the Aachen Region Innovation Prize, which was held in the Coronation Hall of the City Hall on November 17. The winner in the category Business Establishment went to the Firm of Essedea GmbH & Co KG from Wassenberg. This business develops, produces and markets three-dimensional textiles with natural thermo-humid-regularization from 100% polyester (www.3dea.de). The products are used in all areas of activity, particularly in the wellness area. They are used for inlays in seats, utility vehicles and mattresses, and used for prophylactic purposes.
Aachen’s Continental AG tire company received the innovation prize for its SSR tires. Unlike conventional tires, the SSR principle is based on a reinforced self-supporting sidewall. This prevents the inside of the tire from getting pinched between the road and the rim and from slipping into the rim well in the event of a loss of inflation. The SSR's reinforced sidewall enables the car to continue on its way at a maximum speed of 80 km/h (50 mph) for up to
80 km (50 miles), depending on road conditions and vehicle weight.
In the Growth category the Herpers GmbH foundry won a prize for their ‘AeroSande’ patented innovation. This is an innovation which provides new opportunities for the foundry business. Herpers has succeeded in using a combination of aerogels and classic foundry sand to produce an entirely new product. In addition to reduction of costs and a higher level of competitive ability, it has high quality and a wide range of applications.

The prize is supported by NRW.Bank, Philips Technologie GmbH and Microsoft Innovation Center Europe, the Sparkasse and FEG Textiltechnik Forschungs- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH, Hellweg Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG, Hamacher Maschinenbau GmbH and SPACECAST Präzisionsguss GmbH & Co KG.
