SOLAR POWER ON AACHEN’S ROOFS
[BIZ/INFRA: Aachen, November 16] Germany is currently leading the way in the installation of solar power units. There are solar cells with 1500MW performance being installed on roofs or facades of houses in Germany, and half of these were installed in the last year. Worldwide 5000MW were installed in 2005. The city of Aachen is now opening its roofs, as it were, to solar panels. The city is going to take part in the Solar Lokal program, which is designed to increase solar power in the district, cities and municipalities of the Region. People who have suitable roofs will be supported by the City of Aachen when they install solar power sources. Twenty-six solar power units have been installed on 15 buildings, producing 470kWp on the city’s schools alone. A total of 300 installations, with a potential of 1900kWp, are already active in Aachen, but there is considerable potential for further sustainable power units. Search the Internet for the options.
In the context of new energy, there is a focus on solar power. In Germany the boom in solar power could lead through 2025 to as many as 80,000 jobs in the solar cell business. This is also good for the environment. The carbon emission offsets would amount to 350 million tons from 2025, and this is equal to the amount of CO2 that 150 coal-fired power plants produce in Germany, or 40% of Germany’s annual CO2 emissions.
