LIEGE IN THE US SOUTH

[BIZ: Columbia S.C., November 16]
There was a major presentation in South Carolina in November, with 40 people attending a conference on doing business in Liège and an explanation of the role of the Liège Development Company SPI+. The Mayor of Columbia (Columbia is the primary city of the Midlands region of South Carolina), was present and has been asked to lead a delegation to Liège in 2007.

Liège is already well known in South Carolina’s Midlands. FN Manufacturing, from Liège, has been active in Columbia for over 30 years. The City of Columbia was the sponsor and part of the Midlands delegation to Liège, in March 2005, where a region-to-region relationship was established.

SPI+ is not only interested in attracting investment to Liège, it’s also developing relationships based on mutual needs, and in addition to the South Carolina Midlands, the agency has developed relations with regions in Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina with a focus on the life sciences and logistics sectors.

To attract SMEs, the University of Liège has established its interdisciplinary cluster for applied genoproteomics (GIGA) in close cooperation with the academic and corporate communities for research in genoproteomics applied to the biomedical sciences. The GIGA center has already attracted several companies that are in residence and is especially interested in welcoming US companies.
