INNOVATION IN THE OR
[BIZ/LIFE-SCI: Maastricht November 14] The project was presented by Nick Guldemond of the orthopedics department at Maastricht University Hospital AZM.
During the visit of State Secretary for Economic Affairs Karien van Gennip to Maastricht, a project was discussed in the context of an experimental hospital OR. Essentially this means using micro-electromechanical systems for a whole range of monitoring activities during surgery. These systems are now being incorporated in the technology of the operating room with sensors providing haptics for the instruments, the use of smart material, smart catheters, wireless connectivity and integrated technology for plug and play use.
