LIEGE ENGINEERS AT US STEEL

[BIZ: Liège/Chicago, October 2]
The largest blast furnace in the US has been totally overhauled under the guidance of Seraing-based company, Pirson, in the Province of Liège. The dismantling and assembly work had to be carried out in record time, as the unit produces 10,000 tons of steel per day, generating USD 1.5m of turnover.

The work, commissioned by America’s market leader, US Steel, was carried out by 1,400 American workers under the direction of a Belgian team of around 50 engineers and technicians. In addition to the site equipment and containers, a gigantic crane was shipped from the port of Antwerp to Chicago to provide the heavy lifting capacity on the job.

A family-run company established in 1979 and employing 80 staff in Seraing, Pirson Montage provides customers with a range of diversified services associated with assembling metal structures and co-owns some of the world’s most impressive equipment, including a caterpillar crane capable of lifting up to 1,600 tons.
