PLEA FOR NUCLEAR POWER

[BIZ: Namur, September 2]
The Walloon Minister Mr. Antoine has supported an extension of the deadline, for Belgium’s exit from nuclear power, to 2060. Mr. Antoine said this to the Belgian business paper 'L'Echo'. He said that the legislative proposal made seven years ago to stop the production of nuclear power in Belgium was untenable. He based his estimate on the insufficient energy provision alternatives in Belgium. He also warned of the penalties to the Walloon economy.

In 1999 a coalition of Liberal Socialists and the Green Party decided to close down seven nuclear reactors after 40 years of service nationwide. In the last year the succeeding government has extended the deadline by a further 20 years and the way is open for further delays.
