LIMBURG CALLS FOR BUS TENDERS

[BIZ/LOG: Maastricht, February 17]
A EUR 1.2bn public transport order for the Province of Limburg has been put out to tender. Operators must offer a full public transport service in Limburg from December 10. This tender includes both public transport by train (excluding National Rail) by bus, and regional (shared) taxis. This tender is part of the reorganization of public transport established in a policy document, the title of which refers to the various modes of public transport including train, bus, and taxis. The business will be going to one company at the end of the year.

The objective is to achieve quality improvement in public transport. Current contracts will end on December 10. This is for buses in North and Central Limburg (Hermes), Maastricht (SBM), Heuvelland (Limex), and South Limburg (Hermes), and applies to most of the ongoing contracts and the train concessions for the Maas line (Nijmegen-Roermond) and the Heuvelland line (Maastricht-Kerkrade).

The new Limburg public transport system will start up on the basis of these new concessions and public transport contracts. The tender must determine which providers get the contract. As Limburg is geographically divided into two parts — ‘South Limburg’ and ‘North and Central Limburg’ — the companies can apply for one part or for the whole province.

There has been the opportunity for companies to discuss the new policy, and the results of market research have confirmed the Province in its opinion that the multimodal approach is a good one. The full text is on the province’s site.
