NUON & ESSENT WANT TO MERGE

[BIZ/INFRA: Brussels, February 9]
The two biggest players in the Dutch energy market, Nuon and Essent, think that a merger is the answer to the separation of the network companies. Various reliable sources confirm in the Dutch weekly Fem Business that both companies are looking into a merger. The two companies are also active in Flanders. The initiative, which was considered a couple of years ago, comes from the Nuon board and a plan is already on the drawing board. The third largest energy company in The Netherlands, Eneco, doesn’t want to take part.

The companies want to get together as a response to the proposed separation of the network companies to be carried out by the Dutch minister, Brinkhorst. This is the only way they think they can resist foreign takeover.
