ENERGY ISSUES

[BIZ/INFRA: Rotterdam, January 21]
Cees Banning in the Dutch quality daily, NRC Handelsblad writes about liberalization in the energy business and notes that government and EU policy is to split energy companies into network companies and commercial companies, including supply, trade, and production. The major Dutch energy companies Nuon, Eneco, Essent, and Delta are going to pay an environmental specialist a fee of EUR 1.7m if he is able to prevent this division in the system. There is concern, at large, about the size of the fee and whether it will influence the independence of the nature of the study.
