STEVAERT SUSPENDS TAX
[BIZ/GOV: Hasselt, January 20]
The governor of Belgian Limburg Steve Stevaert has suspended a controversial tax that had to be paid by retail businesses in the center of Genk. Governor Stevaert agreed with a complaint made by the opposition VLD (Liberal) party that the tax — known as the ‘promo tax’ — was set up in 2003 to facilitate the operation of the center management service. The tax was levied for commercial activities accessible to the public in the center of Genk. Mayor Jef Gabriels (CD&V - Christian Democrat) of Genk said that the city council would reapply the old tax regulation.
