BELGIUM LICENSES ONLINE GAMING
[BIZ: Brussels, January 19] It is thought that by issuing a limited number of licenses that the gamblers could be drawn to a legal gaming operation. The proposal relates to a general license that would include betting as well as games of chance. A study reveals that 90,000 internet gamblers are active in Belgium, producing revenues of EUR 27m.
The Belgian commission responsible for gaming is going to issue a number of licenses to gaming websites to prevent uncontrolled growth on the Internet. In Belgium most online gaming sites operate from offshore tax havens such as Antigua, Gibraltar, Costa Rica, and the Cayman Islands. This enables them to avoid Belgian legislation.
