SATURN IN MAASTRICHT?

Maastricht’s ‘De Ster’ paper says that the German retail electronics giant Saturn, specializing in household appliances and home entertainment is to establish a new superstore in the Sphinx building in Maastricht. Saturn and Media Markt make up MediaSaturn Holding, owned by the German retail trade company METRO.

With more than 100 stores across Germany Saturn is one of the big players in German electronics retail business. It also has 8 stores in Austria, 3 in Poland and 2 in Hungary. METRO Group sales for 2005 were up 4.2 percent and International sales showed dynamic growth of 10.5 percent up to EUR 29.8bn. The Sphinx building, which will be vacated next year when the company moves to a new location in the city, is now owned by the city, ING real estate and the BPF pension fund. Saturn has made no comment about this proposed purchase.
