CARGO RECORD FOR MAA

[BIZ/LOG: Maastricht, January 11]
Maastricht Aachen Airport has achieved record cargo volumes for the second year in succession. In 2005, 82,650 tons of air cargo were handled, 57,500 coming by air and the rest (presumably) by truck. The passenger figures rose to 356,000 including 314,000 on scheduled services and holiday charters. The number of flight movements was reduced by 12,600 as a result of the departure of the National Pilot School.

The growth in freight was 17% and primarily achieved in scheduled freight services, which strengthens the structural basis for freight at MAA. In the summer period of 2005, the world freight sector lost some ground, but the acquisition of Malaysian Airlines from the beginning of September has more than compensated for this. Maastricht Handling Services now has four fixed-scheduled services to MAA by Royal Jordanian, Turkish Airlines, Cargolux, and Malaysian Airlines. The freight services are flown to Jordan, Turkey, India, Kenya, China, and Malaysia. There are freight charters every week.

A growth of 35% in commercial passenger flights was primarily caused by two new links with low-cost airlines. From 2005 EasyJet started to fly twice a day to Berlin and a Romanian airline, Blue Air, flew three times a week to Bucharest. The number of passengers on charter flights rose slightly, primarily to Turkish destinations, and there was a slight drop in the scheduled services to Amsterdam. This last was primarily a result of capacity problems with KLM, which had to takeover the Amsterdam link from Air Exel unexpectedly in February.

The number of flight movements fell from 32,454 to 19,823 and this was virtually entirely a result of the departure of the pilot school NLS. The number of flights for ordinary passengers and cargo rose by 2.5%. MAA is looking forward to increased growth in freight volume and passengers in 2006.
